Churches Map

Welcome to our Map of Wigan's Churches

Welcome to our interactive map of churches and other places of worship in the Wigan area.  Click on a church on the list or on the map.  You can zoom in and out using your mouse. There are also options to open in a new tab for a larger screen, this is the top right icon.

The map shows churches and chapels which are open today, those which remain in people’s memories and others which are lost in the mists of time remembered only by a precious photograph or a proud anniversary booklet kept in a dusty box in Archives: Wigan and Leigh.

We are putting put the map on our website even though it is unfinished, very much ‘work in progress’, and, as always, your comments and suggestions are very welcome.

But already you can begin to see the sheer number of places of worship especially in the town centre. Imagine the scene just before the First World War, Wigan full of folk walking proudly to ‘our church’, the sound of hymns being sung audible on virtually every street.

With thanks to David Gibson and Sarah Chin-a-Loy for helping us to create this map.
